About Our Program
The California Physical Education-Health Project and the California
Center for Excellence in Physical Education, two professional
organizations focused on improving the quality of instruction
provided to students in physical education have joined together to
provide a high quality professional development series to assist
physical education teachers to move to a standards-based learning
environment similar to that of other subjects taught in schools.
This program has been very successful in assisting teachers over
the past 5 years to improve their practice and is designed to create
a professional culture that provides on-going support to teachers to
plan their work that is focused on assuring that students learn the
important skills and knowledge need to live an active healthy life.
The PEPDS series began working with teachers in the Spring of
2005 immediately following the adoption by the California State
Board of Education of the Physical Education Model Content
Standards for California Public Schools.
It is the only articulated professional development program for
physical educators focused on standards-based
instructional design and implementation of
standards-based instruction in physical education.
As of 2010, more than 60% of California’s physical
educators have participated in the program.
